CHANDIGARH: Each year, mouth cancer continues to take several young lives as the disease is most commonly seen in those male patients who never say no to tobacco products. However, the oral cancer count has increased drastically in the past one year. Compared with the last year, PGI has seen a 40-50% increase in such cases this year.
In a study conducted by PGI doctors two years ago, it was found that oral cancer is one of the major lifestyle diseases in the present times.
Tobacco, alcohol unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and lack of awareness remain the underlying reasons behind this form of cancer. Tobacco use and excessive alcohol consumption have been estimated to account for about 90% of cancers in oral cavities.
Talking about the need to aware oneself regarding this form of cancer, Dr Nitin Jain, dermatologist, said, "Oral cancer is the most common form of cancer among young people, especially males, which often leads to death. India has the highest incidence of mouth cancer in the world. Chewing tobacco and betel quid is a significant risk factor for oral cancer. Betel quid contains a variety of ingredients such as lime, catechu and areca nut and is often mixed with tobacco. Since micronutrient deficiencies of iodine, iron, and vitamin A are highly prevalent in children, which makes the younger lot much more vulnerable to this disease."
Over 70% of such cases are detected late as oral cancer patients approach doctors for treatment at a very advanced stage. Apart from the pain and misery cancer inflicts on the patient as well her family, the expensive treatment leaves families under debt for years to come. White lesions in the mouth, which are asymptomatic oral pathological entities with a potential to form cancer, include dysplasia, erythroplasia, leukoplakia, lichen planus and submucosal fibrosis. The proper diagnosis of oral pre-cancerous lesions for early detection and intervention programmes can make a world of difference. "Always get an incurable mouth ulcer thoroughly checked. The lesions appear as white spots, lines, blisters and ulcers," he added.
Amit Shankar, senior resident doctor of ENT department at PGI, said, "Oral cancer risk increases when tobacco is used in combination with alcohol or areca nut. It has also been seen in such patients that those who take a low-fruit and vegetable diet are more at risk. If the patient approaches medical authorities at an initial stage, she can be cured in time."
